Needs warmth, love and tender care

I hate this fucking time difference. My internet has been down from mid afternoon till now. Was just about to skype WJ when I realised that she's probably still sleeping. I guess its only been 2 days since we last had a good skype conversation but it seems like forever. Is it me or did the night just get colder...

Christmas Parade

The only digital photo that I managed to take at the Christmas Parade last friday. The battery died immeidately after I previewed this shot. I swear the battery life is greatly shorten by the cold. Or maybe I simply forgot to charge the camera before leaving home... Anyhow, I did manage to get some photos with my trusty lomo! I hope they turn out fine!
I think the parade was mostly for little kids and exchange students. Because it was only the kids and the exchange students jostling for the candies that the Santas and Santarinas were throwing into the crowd. Hohohoho I can't wait for my christmas present to arrive. I think countdowns only make the days seem longer... It sounds kind of perverse but I can't wait to sit for my exams! Once that stupid hurdle is over, the holiday and christmas begins! 12th 12th 12th!!!

Aarhus 2 - 0 Silkeborg

The loyal supporters of AGF, the local football club. I did my part by eating a big mac meal to get my free ticket for the match. Its called the "support your town's team menu" which costs 60DKK which is about SGD16.00. Yup 16 bucks for a big mac meal. I swear it was worse in Norway and contrary to popular believe, Sweden is much cheaper than Denmark and Norway. This is the latest big mac index compiled by the Economist. Singapore is at -29% whilst Denmark sits at +50% and Norway at +98%. Anyhow, the match was really good and AGF really deserved to win. It was almost like a local derby as there isn't another football club in Aarhus and Silkeborg is the next closest town. Despite being so close, the Silkeborg fan turn out was dismal. The bit of the stadium that was reserved for the Silkeborg fans was practically empty. Here's a shaky video of the first goal, its shaky cos its hard to make a video with one ungloved hand (the other hand was holding a cup of hot coffee) at 0 degrees. You can make out the empty bit that was allocated for the opposing team's fans.

And moving away from soccer, onto something equally sensational, the hanging of Nguyen Tuong Van. I have been following the whole saga on BBC and Straits Times and its really interesting to see how the whole thing has developed. It is also interesting to see how the blogging phenomenon has managed to influence the reporting style of BBC correspondents. Well I suppose this is the way the world works now isn't it? Everything is just opinions and viewpoints. No need for any old fashion proof or evidence. Statistics? Opinion polls? Bah! who needs those fuddy duddy stuff!
I always assumed that a blogger is a person who writes what he/she feels or senses and that a correspondent when writing an opinion should do the same, with the minor exception that he/she has to substantiate his/her viewpoints with some form of justification (anything more than a mere "sense of something"). I suppose the middle ground would be a Wikipedia contributor. Oh well, maybe I'm just too traditional. Old fashioned even. But some say old is gold.

Anyhow, according to this BBC bloggerspondent, all of you (my Singaporean friends) reading this are living in a climate of fear *shudder* Hurry! run home before the boogey man catches you. Or in this case, maybe the state will catch all of you and throw you in a prison with some exotic name like Guantanamo or Gaucamole bay prison where you will be held without trial! Run Run! Hide Hide!
And reforms and changes in countries other than Singapore happen overnight! Yes, for all you swakoo readers, in ultra modern and ultra hip western countries, changes take place in a snap of a fingers. Like in the UK, if they want to implement a national identity card system, like our NRIC system in Singapore, they can do so overnight.... Right???? There will be no protest about a violation of privacy and no big fuss about biometric tagging.... right??

Apart from bloggerspondents, apparently you don't really need to have a lot of grey matter in your skull to be the prime minister of a country. Or maybe that's just confined to the 70s era, which I most certainly hope is the case. According to this esteemed former diplomat, I hail from a "rogue chinese port" city.... hmmm interesting... everyday I learn more and more about myself and my country. I didn't know that there were only Chinese in Singapore. I also didn't know that my Malay and Indian neighbours are Chinese too.... now... apparently.YES! Even our national anthem is in Chinese too!! Well I'm just a mere undergrad and not a former prime minister. What would I know...
Although I may not know much about race and ethnicity, I do pride myself on knowing a thing or two about simple economics and basic supply and demand. And that economic strangulation or cutting off trade ties does not put an end to drug production. In my humble opinion, if the world does place an embargo or restrict trade and economic ties with Burma, the production of poppy would just simply increase. Farmers would turn to poppy cultivation, in fact most people would turn to the illicit drug production industry. WHY!? Because everything else that they produce cannot be exported. Because drugs would simply be a more lucrative alternative. Because you don't need offical trade relations to sell drugs abroad. There are no export duties and no import taxes on drugs. Because drugs would be paid for in cold hard international currency, Aussie Dollar, US Dollar etc etc which would in turn be used to pay for blackmarket imports or necessities. Because demand for drugs is inelastic. And it is a simple rule of economics that if you can't fix the supply side, you can always try to fix the demand aspect of the problem.

What a sensational Sunday. Oh yes, and in case you havent figured it out by now. I am a blogger. Not a correspondent.

Fear Factor

S: Would you like some of my century egg?
D: NO!
In spite of a bad headache from too many Jagermeisters last night, I manage to make an almost typical chinese brunch of century egg porridge, homemade Char Siew and spring roll. I think century egg doesn't really go down so well with European taste buds. Only 1 out of 4 managed to finish her bowl of porridge! hahaha the look on their faces was priceless though! But the char siew and spring rolls were gone within 3 minutes.
What a pity I can't find durians here. I wonder how they would react to that...

Bus Listing, Bright Lighting

Freezing whilst waiting for the bus last night after the Austrian Eat.
The minor upside of last night's cold is that it is snowing now.
Sometimes I do wish that I could bicycle home, instead of always having to wait for the bus.
Unfortunately I have a horrible sense of balance but I make up for it by having a good sense of humour.
Prayers and thoughts go out to George Best. Although he gained fame playing for a shitass-not-worth-mentioning club, he was a son of the game and an outstanding soccer player.

All I want for Christmas is...

Got a nice little Christmas Tree for my nice little room. Was thinking of getting a live one but then I'm sure I'll end up murdering (maybe CHNAM... no mens rea) it before Christmas so I got a plastic, pre decorated one! I think it adds a little festive warmth to my room. Plus I've bought some nice red Christmas candles that I'll put in the recycled jam jars to make nice lamps!
I wonder if WJ can fit under that tree though... cos she is the best present that I'm getting this Christmas!
Just got back from a fantastic dinner. It was the Austrian Eat at the International Student Centre today. I am so bloody full I could explode any moment. Beer and a heavy dinner do not go well together. Very tempted to puke but the thought of having to clean the fucking toilet tomorrow has changed that. I miss my maid! Plus it would be an insult to my Austrian friends who really whipped up a good dinner. Here's a look at what I had for dinner

Starters
Clear Beef Soup

Main Course
Eiernockeln mit Grunem Salat = Small fried flour dumplings with egg and green salads
Erdapfelpuffer = Potato Flans
Kasierschmarrn = Empirial Omelet
Rindsschnitzel mit Bandnudeln und Sauce = Beef Cutlet with ribbon noodles and sauce.

Dessert
Apfel Strudel = Apple Strudel
Marillen Roulade = Apricot Roulade
Marmor Gugelhupf = RingCake
Sachertorte = Sacher Cake
Zwetschken Kuchen = Plum Cake

Absolutely Fabulous!

Reflections...

Outside looking in, which side of the mirror are you on?
We should let our imagination decide. But reality always has a way of outdoing our imagination.

Exam times are always good for reflection because the mind would more than willingly wander away from the dreary books. I have been thinking...

1. I really love the life here. Apart from my exam campaign, I spend most of my time reading books from the well stocked state library, Russell to Rousseau, Satre to Salman Rushdie, Picasso to Pissaro, Hopper to Hobbes, Industrial age to Ice Age etc etc... And the funny thing is that I feel that this is the best form of education I have received in my 23 years on planet earth. If I'm not reading, I'm out in the woods, or at the beach (not now when its freezing), walking around downtown....

2. How many of us really want to be lawyers because we want to Right the Wrong or Help the Helpless? I've been blog surfing and I've realised that so many of my peers would rather do something else, like being a foreign correspondent in some other country or a housewife or a banker etc etc. Which makes me wonder why the hell are we putting ourselves through all this shit. Well for me, its the money. Or the potential money. That sounds more correct. Nothing is certain in life apart from death and taxes.
Well actually, deep down inside, I do feel that there is a sense of justice that is yelling for nourishment and nurture. Maybe by nature, I do want to Right the Wrong or Help the Helpless and erradicate injustice from the face of the earth but perhaps due to societal influence such as materialism etc etc that feeling has been suppressed. Well assuming everything else constant, if the above mentioned societal influence were removed, I am pretty sure that I would use my legal knowledge/expertise in the area of law enforcement. Yup, to be a Police officer. Why not? I mean thats the best way to help the masses! And on top of that, I would like to be a police officer in Germany! Here are the more elaborate reasons. And to help me move towards this utopian idea, (not that i am recanting my materialistic believes, but I do believe that that inner voice needs to be entertained once in a while) I have taken steps to improve my German.

3. That reading 3 pages in 2 hours is still considered progress.

The Time is Now...

Exams are round the corner, 1.5 weeks time to be precise.
Time to dust off the books and reading glasses and get some cramming done.
First day of the studying campaign was a disaster. But that is keeping with tradition.
I tried to start studying this morning but got nothing in my head so I headed downtown to do some Christmas shopping. After lunch, tried again but was pleasantly interrupted by WJ... After dinner I tried to start again but ended up trying to decipher the lyrics of 周杰伦 latest hit 枫 with Pearlyn. I swear the album is fantastic and 百度 rocks! haha

-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
eh the girl died ah?
:: pearlyn :: says:
urrm
:: pearlyn :: says:
u see when i read
:: pearlyn :: says:
i also think the girl died!
:: pearlyn :: says:
cos he said...
:: pearlyn :: says:
我用力牵起没温度的双手
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
yah
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
i also think so leh
:: pearlyn :: says:
让爱渗透了地面
我要的只是你在我身
:: pearlyn :: says:
yeah...
:: pearlyn :: says:
BUT
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
yah lor
:: pearlyn :: says:
被伤透的心能不能够继续爱我
我用力牵起没温度的双手
:: pearlyn :: says:
look at first line.
:: pearlyn :: says:
he seems to be asking the girl whether like he hurt her...and whether she can still love him
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
yah so maybe the girl is metaphorically dead
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
dead to him only
:: pearlyn :: says:
but... i dun think so leh... cos...urrm...if he did something worng...then the song sounds more wrong
:: pearlyn :: says:
yeah..maybe.
:: pearlyn :: says:
but then if he cheated then...ummm. dunno leh.
:: pearlyn :: says:
or maybe he didn't do anything wrong
:: pearlyn :: says:
it's just that she loved another
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
yah so cold to him rite

And we came to the conclusion that..

:: pearlyn :: says:
i tell u ahh...when i go kTV (if i go) i'd go and look at the MTV then i tell u!
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
must see the dammn MTV rite
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
i was about to say that

And it ended with me saying...
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
instead of studying i'm here intepreting lyrics
-prometheus- Sick of Beer says:
like machiam lit class

What a fruitful day... Anybody seen the MTV? Or have their views?
Oh yes and a BIG GOOD LUCK! To all my friends suffering from the scourge of the exam plague. Hang in there... It will all be over soon!

Christmas Cookie Crunch

Spent the whole of yesterday afternoon baking cookies. I swear they taste better when you make them yourself. Here are some pictures of the whole production. It was fun! I've never made cookies from scratch before! Kneading the dough really does give you a sense of accomplishment! hahaha
And here's a video of how Christmas cookies are really made all over Europe. In dark dingy basements, poor,helpless Asian immigrant children are being put to work for hours on end so that you can enjoy your Christmas cookies before Christmas. Not only do they work long hours, they are often abused too. Stop Child Labour!

Camouflage

Ever felt the need to blend in? Ever felt like you're the odd one out?
I'm sure this mushroom must have felt really out of place amongst the fallen autumn leaves.
More pictures from my almost weekly walk in the woods. I love the countryside.

Jammy goes to the FrisØr

Finally got round to shedding my locks. Ok, so I may not look like some pop icon now (beatles) but I think I prefer my hair short. Although like Samson, I do feel somewhat vulnerable after having my hair cut. Vulnerable to the cold and the wind when it lashes across the nape of my neck which was perviously covered by my luxuriant black tresses.
The trip to the frisØr was an adventure in itself. It took me 3 tries before I finally found the right one. Third time lucky I guess! My quest began along this street downtown where there were a few frisØrs located. I started at the head of the street and first stop was Salon Elegance, which looked anything but elegant. There was a rather grumpy looking lady inside who didn't look like she would understand or bother to understand a single word of Danglish (Danish+Singlish) so I decided to press on. This is an invaluable lesson that I learnt from my Mom on our many shopping trips. Never stop at the first shop.
Ok so the next one was FrisØr Las Palmas. Exotic and exciting you say? Well those are not two words to describe a haircut. Anyway, on closer inspection, I saw that the place was staffed by 2 Arabic men who were busy working their customers heads with a shaver. I hate it when barbers or hairdressers just shave away at your head with those dammn electric shavers, like how a shearer works a sheep. Yucks. On top of that, I think the probability of them speaking Danish and Arabic or Danic would be higher than English, Danglish or Mandarin!
NEXT!
By this time I was damn sian and was thinking of just heading back home for a nice hot lunch and to forget about the whole cutting hair idea. But I decided to try one more place. THANK GOD I did! Well... res ipsa loquitur! My hair was cut by a friendly young Danish lady who spoke pretty decent english! What a fitting end to my adventure!

sian
/sien, sIEn/ v. & a. [Hk., bored, depressed, in low spirits; Mand. mèn] A v. Bored, fed-up, tired. B a. Boring, dull, tiring.

Autmun... Going Going Gone?

So the first snow has fallen and almost all the leaves are gone. I guess it is safe for this tropical boy to assume that Autumn is going and Winter is coming.
Time. Only time, passing me by.
The past few days have been dragging on like an eternity. I can't wait for everything to fast forward to the 12th of December. I think this was clearly reflected in the wish I made when I saw the falling star on Tuesday night. (oh yes, I saw a falling star whilst waiting for the bus in the f**king cold). Instead of wishing that I strike 4D or Toto or Big Sweep or even the Danish Lottery, I made a very law-studentish wish. Now, I know that you are only entitled to one wish per star so I wished that the days till the 12th whizz by like seconds and the days till the 4th of January last for an eternity. It is essentially one wish, just broken into two parts, simply a manipulation of the same wish matter, time.
Time. Only time, just pass me by.
I've added 2 more links to my blog. All of you should check them out. One is the bravest boy ever to step out of Maris Stella High and the other is the best thing that happened to me in Army (Yup he did all the work while I Kiao Kar and read my Economist).
Also, to prove that I am not so Obiang or outdated or non techy blogger, I've added a Flickr Badge. Well everyone seems to be adding music or Flash to their blog but being the Conservative Tropical Asian boy that I am, I've just added a Flickr Badge.
Oh yes, and this is how a lawyer from a civil law tradition decribes a Common law lawyer.
"He reads the contract you've drafted like how the Devil reads the Bible."
Interesting...

Electrifying Elections

Yesterday was elections day in Aarhus. The local elections that is, for city council and regional offices. For the past few weeks they have been stuffing my mailbox with pamphlets and flyers but this particular flyer caught my eye. It says something like "Against Mosque" and "Say no to Big mosques and Islamisation". Maybe I am just a conservative asian boy from a country where election campaigning is almost unheard of but this leaflet really struck me as... well it struck me.
I don't think it is a conicidence that there are riots in France, (the title of this entry has nothing to do with electrocution of any non-white teenagers fleeing from police whatsoever) and that there are ghettos in Denmark or all over Europe. Ghettos or rather suburbs where immigrants live on their own free will or ordered to do so by the Government. Suburbs where it feels more like North Africa than Europe.
France's problem could be western europe's problem soon. There was a symbolic torching of a car a few nights back in Aarhus by some immigrants, as a sign of solidarity for their brethren in France.
So is the solution to the problem to stop building mosuque and to put an end to all immigration? To start a mass deportation? Is Islam to be blame? Why Mosque? Why a place of worship?Why religion?
Is relgion and race really an issue or just economics? I think economics and religion is a flammable combination (no pun intended). Almost as potent as religion and politics.
“IN THE deprived suburbs, a kind of soft terror rules. When too many young people see nothing ahead but unemployment after they leave school, they end up rebelling. For a time the state can struggle to impose order, and rely on welfare benefits to avoid worse. But how long can this last?”
This speech was made by Mr Chirac and I think it highlights that religion is not the underlying problem but rather economics and policy. Such a pity that this speech was made by Mr Chirac 10 years ago. If something was done then or has been done since then, perhaps religion today wouldn't have to be the whipping boy for economic and policy failures.

Kiao Kar

I think student life in Europe is really good. Readings are sparse, everyone just tries to out-smoke each other (well actually, learning is centered around discussion and debate) and the pace is nice and relax. Look! They even have Kiao Kar areas on campus. At the end of the day are lawyers from these countries less qualified than us? I really don't think so. (Judging by the salaries and the number of FTs in Singapore. FTs = Fallen Talent or was it Foreign Talents) If this was NUS, the sign would not be of a person kiao kar on a chair but rather a student buried in books.
Anyway, for those not of Singaporean origin, here's the meaning of Kiao Kar, from the Singlish Dictionary.
kiao kar /kiow kah, kIaU kA/ v. phr. [Hk. kiao shake + kar leg; Mand. 摇脚 yáo jiăo] Be idle, while away the time. Also shake legs.

Warm for Winter

A lovely surprise greeted me yesterday when I opened my mailbox!
A bright and cheery scarf! So bright that everything arounds it pales by comparison!
I am a lucky boy indeed!
Thanks Darling!

Irony

I left my roll of film next to my watch and wallet so that I would remember to drop it off for developing tomorrow. How ironic that the roll of film ended up between my watch and my kronnors, as if to remind me how expensive it is to develop 120 film and how dammn long it takes.

Starry Night

Early night, 1730hrs. View from my window.

Someone asked me why I don't blog about WJ or put pictures of her on my blog anymore.
I have been doing so. Everything that I do has her in it. Because she is always with me in my heart, every photo that I take, I take it with her and for her.

Old is Gold

As the world races at breakneck speed to embrace new technology, I find myself increasingly seduced by what yesterday has to offer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some ignorant oaffish neanderthal extolling the virtues of cave painting over photography. I just feel that not all things new and high tech are necessarily good. I guess this feeling stems largely from my believe in functionality and simplicity. Its like how I feel that an email can never replace a handwritten letter in terms of conveying emotions and feelings. Its like how you can't fax a handshake or give a pat on the back through video conferencing.
Given a choice I would abandon my digital cameras for a lovely old school mechanical camera and light meter. But I have to admit that economics dictates that i stick to digital photography because it is much cheaper in the long run and allows for a steeper learning curve.
So for now, I shall allow myself to be seduced but not succumb to temptation.

GoodFriends,GoodNews,GoodWeekend,Goteborg

I guess this photo just about sums up my trip to Goteborg. A nice mix of sightseeing, catching up with old friends, eating, taking shelter from the rain at the many unique cafes and just soaking up the city. I think Goteborg is a much more vibrant place than Aarhus considering both are the 2nd largest cities of Sweden and Denmark respectively. A big THANK YOU to Henrik and Amelia for putting up with me and for putting me up, for driving me around Goteborg and all the way to Trollhattan too! I will endeavour to buy every single design that the both of you create for Ikea as a sign of my gratitude! (when I can afford to, of course)
I think the Saab factory/museum at Trollhattan was really good. I love the old school Saab badges and the cool rally cars.
So, now that Goteborg is over, I guess it is time to start studying...

Photos of Goteborg. Travel light by bringing my contax but came back heavy with regret. But I think this trip was more about catching up then catching images.

Reflections...

In quite a good blogging mood today, largely due to my trip to Goteborg, Sweden tomorrow.
The song "homesick" by kings of convenience is stuck in my head and the lyrics inspired this photo. "everyday there's a boy in the mirror asking me what are you doing here?" Not that I am homesick now, as you can see by the big smile on my face. I just love the catchy melody and the lyrics are really meaningful, to me at least.
I've spent the evening thinking...
1) that for my trip to Goteborg, I will commit camera infidelity and abandon my faithful SLR who has accompanied me half way around the world, in favour of my handy CONTAX.
2) that I've been going to school conscientiously for the past 2 weeks and I am begining to feel more like an international student. I'm really starting to enjoy campus life, appreciating the lovely university park(i really have to take a picture of it), going round the different faculty bars on friday afternoon, grabbing a coffee with my classmates during the 15 mins break, having lunch in the overpriced but rowdy canteen and yes! studying! well partly cos I had to do a presentation on some copyright law question. But it was so fun because the question was about a hypothetical infringement of Playboy magazine's rights by some Female Rights Group... hohohho playboy and bra burning feminist! Always a potent mix! Yes and because of that I've spent a good afternoon in the Law Library reading up and discussing with my partner!
3) that LLB stands for Law Library Bookworms/Bastards and it is mandatory for law students to spend at least half of their youth in a Law Library. NONE shall escape.
5) that going on exchange is more than just travelling around Europe. it is about enjoying student life in a foreign context, it is about making friends from all over the world and to broaden your perspectives through interaction.
6) that I feel a slight tinge of regret because I could have had a similar life had I stood firm on going to the LSE many moons ago... *sighs*
7) that it wouldn't be that fun if I did so then because I would have to do better than P/F *phew*
8) that I try to keep my hopes and expectations down but the more I tell myself to do so, the more I think about the issue and it just spirals out of control.

Alrighty, I think that's enough posting to last for the next 3 days. Finally my weekend trip is inedeed a trip that lasts only over the weekend and not one that includes a weekend.

Antikvariat

After school I had to go downtown to run some errands for my trip to Goteborg. I decided to walk down instead of taking the bus, partly because I felt that I needed some exercise and partly because I really enjoy the walk through the university park and through the small houses that lead me downtown. The university park is beautiful with the fall colours in full parade. The university is situated around a lovely park with a lake in the middle. I will have to take pictures of the park soon but I always forget to bring my camera to school. (cos i'm always late and rushing) BUT, thats another story for another post.
On my little walk to town, I decided to walk through the latin quater where there are all the antique bookshops and quaint shops selling little curios. I came across this shop that had a big "BOGSALG" (booksale) on the window. I decided to pop in to have a look around. What a brilliant decision (pats self on the back). Inside, I came across a whole series of Leica magazines from the 60s-early 70s! They were the bi monthly magazines published by Leica, neatly bound in nice ring files that had "LEICA FOTOGRAFIE" stamped on them. The best thing was that they costs only 20KR a file!!! I cleared all 3 files off the shelf!.
The only bummer is that the magazine is in German. But then pictures speak a universal language and I do have a german to english dictionary so I suppose its a good way to improve my german. What a find!
I suppose for my female friends reading this, the level of euphoria would be equivalent to you paying only 20KR for a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels.

Colour

Friends have been asking me to put some photos with colour on my blog becuase they find B&W pictures too melancholic. Well, life isn't always a bed of roses and even if it was there's still the problem of thorns. But anyhow, I love my friends and foes alike so here's a late sunset over lake Voss, Norway. Inspired by J.C. Dahl and his beatutiful skyscapes.
FYI... Black and White are colours too.

Float like a Feather

Life would be much easier if we just go with the flow. Floating like a feather in the wind, letting the wind carry you to wherever it wishes. Why do we endeavour to control everything when so many things are beyond our control?
